Our most recent flat happened as we pulled into the church parking lot. So friends of ours helped with putting on the spare & the next I took the flat to get repaired.

Lucky for me, nail was in a spot where I was able to put a plug in the hole without taking the tire off. Had one of those 12V tire pumps. Job done in 15 or so minutes off the side of the road.

ə my lsat one was last thu. around 0300 at a rest area.
when i looked at it, i noticed that the hub cap had five lug nuts on it, but the spare only had four holes! one of the other wheels, which had no hub cap, had four lug nuts.
not knowing what to do, i called aaa and got towed home. it came to the maximum allowable, 100 miles and a tenth over. then my housemate got up and asked me to remove the hub cap. so i tried to take off the lug nuts on it.
they were fake!! i pulled off the hub cap and found—much to my embarrassment—four lug nuts!
so i could have changed it in the rest area! as it was, i changed it at home and got the tire replaced.
what a silly mistake! i hope everyone spreads the word that sometimes it pays to take off the hub cap first! ə

AAA...that's what I pay them for. I have changed many tires in past, but no real point to it if someone else can do it "for free" (I pay for the package whether or not it is used)

ə it was in south dakota last summer. there was no shoulder, so i pulled into a farm drive. when i took off the lug nuts, i noticed they were extremely hot—enough to burn my fingers. i changed the tire, then could not get one of the lug nuts back on. i went on my way and eventually stopped at a repair shop to get a second-hand tire, and they informed me that i had to have the studs replaced as they were stripped! i was out 300 bucks! ouch! in addition, i had to remain there for several hours. grrr! ə
