Solar... That's Electricity dude!
Hydrogen currently costs about $50.00 per 50 miles... that's not equivalent to a car getting 40mpg at a gasoline price of $4.00 per gallon... that's not worth the cost of changing the entire infrastructure for transportation.

Electricity is the only viable possible long term solution.

Hydrogen
This is even in some power plants (out in CA) and Honda has come out with the "Clarity" which runs on hydrogen but CA is the only state with hydrogen refueling stations.

Electric - here in Manitoba we have lots of Hydro - clean, renewable and environmentally friendly. But I want a true electric car, not a hybrid like a Toyota Prius or a Chevy Volt.

ELECTRICITY!!

Ethanol really really bad, it causes food prices to soar because its more profitable as a fuel than food. It still is a carbon based fuel system and adds carbon to the atmosphere (that was bound up in oil and safe from the immediate system way below the earth) by burning as well as the landscape that it require to grow is not nearly as efficient at removing as young (beteen 10 and 200 yrs old) forested areas. so Ethanol = SUCK.

Bio diesel- still carbon based and doesnt solve anything in the long run.

Propane - again carbon based = not the future

Hydrogen might have some possibilities but the energy required to produce at this point is too high.

Electricity is the best long and short term solution. There are many ways to harvest and generate electric power. These need to be instituted on a much much grander scale. solar, wind , hydro.
If there is a way to build a giant space array of solar panels, put it at the lagrange point( point where the net gravitational effect is 0 ) between the earth and moon, and somehow transfer its energy back to earth that could be huge.
If people installed solar panels at on their roofs, apartment buildings, etc, that could add so much to the grids. You could probably even charge your own car without much cost if you did this. IT WOULD NOT kill the grid if the government and states installed the measures above.

Hydrogen would be nice if they could work out all the problems related to it. Realistically, hybrids and ethanol are more likely to get a large share of the alternative market.

Yeah, Thumper6, but it takes energy (for example, electricity) to get the hydrogen from water.

Bio-Diesel, Hybrids and Ethanol are front runners for the near future. I would really like to see Hydrogen fuel cells work, but I wonder if the pollution generated to produce hydrogen or the amount of energy needed to produce it will negate it as a major alternative.

The answer to our problem is not some pie-in-the-sky solution that would take decades to implement. The answer is changing our driving habits.
